The presidential election on Nov. 5 will be here sooner than you think. In Texas, you must register to vote at least 30 days before the election to be eligible to vote.
But why should you care? Everyone assumes Texas is a red state that will reliably vote Republican, but that is not necessarily true. Did you know that Donald Trump won Texas in 2016 by only 5 points, and Ted Cruz by 2 points? Whichever candidate you support, the outcome depends on a relatively few voters making their voices heard!
Voting is particularly important for immigration advocates, such as us. When politicians know their constituents care about an issue, they pay more attention. They react to emails and phone calls more intentionally.
Registering and voting are easy to do. All you need to know about voting in Bexar County, can be found on the Bexar County Elections Department website.
Register (or check the status of your existing registration) by clicking here.
There are plenty of early and same-day voting locations, which will be posted at the Bexar County Elections Department, along with sample ballots by address, when the election draws near.
Further, you can vote by mail If you are:
-
65 years of age or older on Election Day
-
Sick or Disabled (a sickness or physical condition that prevents you from appearing at the polling place on Election Day without a likelihood of needing personal assistance or of injuring your health)
-
Going to be out of the county during Early Voting and on Election Day
-
Confined in jail, but eligible to vote
Know someone who hasn’t voted in several years? Help them check if they are registered. Know someone starting attending college away from home? Reach out to them to encourage them to check on voting registration as a college student.
Let your voices be heard. Do it for democracy! Do it for the future of the U.S.
