In our last newsletter, we asked you to call members of the Texas House State Affairs Committee regarding anti-immigrant legislation, and you stepped up! We logged an unprecedented 187 phone calls to legislators urging them to oppose HB7 and HB20!
You gave us great feedback. Your activism fed your enthusiasm—and ours!
- “I’ve just made these calls….It was easy to do and I won’t be so hesitant next time around. Thanks for your support in advocacy.”
- “Hello! I called members of the House State Affairs Committee to ask them to vote NO to HB7 and HB20. What a thrill! Thank you for the guidance and encouragement to make those calls.”
But it’s not over. These bills are still pending, and legislators need to hear from all who believe that everyone has the right to seek safety. If you haven’t called, please do so this coming week. We’ve learned from your experience that most of the aids answering the phones don’t want or need our reasons; they just want to log that we are asking for a “no” vote, so making thirteen short calls will take less than half an hour. After you’ve made your calls, please drop us a quick email here with “I called members of the House State Affairs Committee” in the subject line. We want to know, as we all get energized knowing we were part of a larger effort.
Please make your calls during office hours Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, and say the following:
- Your name and city. (They may want to know if you are a constituent; but if not, they will still count your call.)
- “I’m calling because you’re on the House State Affairs Committee, and HB 7 and HB 20 will soon be on the agenda. I am asking you to Vote No and not even let these bills leave the committee.”
Committee members and their phone numbers are listed below. Your call will be counted and reported to the member’s Chief of Staff at their daily staff meetings.
