Education is critical to a functioning democracy. This week, we urge you to Take 5 minutes to understand how complex changes in climate and politics affect migration. Your understanding and awareness are crucial in addressing this global issue.
When politicians are asked to look at the root causes of migration, they are talking about this type of thing. By helping them understand the complex variables behind why people leave their homeland behind for a new life unknown, we can contribute to the creation of more effective and humane policies. Climate change is increasingly the push toward migration, which in turn exacerbates existing economic and political problems, but our understanding can help alleviate these issues.
The NPR show All Things Considered has taken a deep dive into how the ripples of climate change are radiating outward, affecting migration and exacerbating political extremism. You can listen to the 12-part series here, or pick and choose 3-4 podcasts. Each one is only about seven minutes.
A more US-focused NPR story titled How Climate Driven Migration Could Change the Face of the U.S., published on March 26, 2024, can be found here.
