“He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.”
~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
Anti-integration forces were deeply entrenched in mid-century Montgomery, Alabama, government when Rosa Parks’s refusal to give up her bus seat to a white man sparked the pivotal, year-long bus boycott. United by their belief in the dignity of all persons, people of faith took action, spoke out, and persisted—all the way up to the Supreme Court—until bus segregation was overturned a year later.
Right now, as anti-immigrant forces are firmly entrenched in Texas government, people of faith must unite in opposition to the deadly, expensive, and ineffective Operation Lone Star. We, too, must take action, speak out, and persist, even when it seems no one is listening.
“I’ve written many letters to the governor, and I’ve never gotten a response….Still, as I ponder various atrocities committed by the Texas Legislature and executive branch, I could not live with myself if I didn’t speak out.”
~ a Texas Lutheran bishop (the Bishops recently sent this letter to Gov. Abbott)
Join We Welcome, a grassroots community of women of faith, in signing the petition to Governor Greg Abbott calling for dignified treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers.
Click here to add your signature.
Then click here to record a voicemail to the governor. Say something like this, or use your own words:
- “Governor Abbott, as a person of faith, I urge you to end Operation Lone Star, which is inhumane and expensive and does nothing to keep us safer. Instead, I urge you to champion comprehensive immigration reform and support organizations that aid immigrants and asylum seekers.”
Then email us here with “I signed the petition and sent a voice mail to Governor Abbott” in the subject line.
Please share this newsletter with your fellow church members and invite them to join you in taking action.
We must speak out, we must persist, and we must never accept the inhumane treatment of our fellow human beings.
