Our speakers for May were be Benjamin Deuel and Cindy Andrade Johnson from La Posada Providencia in San Benito, TX, a shelter serving immigrants and asylum-seekers in the lower Rio Grande Valley for a quarter-century.
Ben Deuel’s faith shines through as he talks about his pastoral ministry and his lifelong commitment to the love, service, and sacrifice that was modeled by his parents, also in service ministries. He took on the post of Executive Director of La Posada Providencia in January of this year and moved with his wife, Wendy, and their four children to the Rio Grande Valley where they enjoy animals, outdoor activities, and good fellowship with migrating families, volunteers, and neighbors.
Deaconess Cindy Johnson has been a volunteer consultant at La Posada Providencia since 2020, but she has worked with migrants along the border all her life. An educator for three decades, she prioritizes and emphasizes cultural competence, offering skills and tools that will prepare guests for their new experiences. She considers La Posada Providencia a model of how migrants should be treated: justly and with compassion.
