In August, Moon Sanchez Brand often found herself as a volunteer on-site manager at the Bungalow Shelter, a short-term, city-sponsored location where migrant families could isolate in case they might be carrying Covid-19. Looking out, she saw a lithe silhouette on the grounds, sneaking around. Alert to the danger of human trafficking, Moon flew into action.
She apprehended the perpetrator and demanded an explanation.
The young woman responded with equal fervor, and a heated exchange ensued until, suddenly, at about the same time, they both realized, “Hey! We might be on the same side!”
Turns out, “Wency” was a Haitian artist-activist who thought we were ICE, holding people at the hotel. And we were–well, just doing our thing!
So from that moment forward, IWC and the Haitian Bridge Alliance became partners, joining forces to a noble end, that mercy will triumph over cruelty, unity over division, and love over hate.
It turned out, too, that Wency, the artist-activist, is a violinist. Look her up on YouTube!
