- Update, Due to inclement weather the event has moved to January 28, 2024. Mary Grace Ketner, IWC volunteer and editor of Traveling Mercies: Encounters with Asylum Seekers – as well as several of the stories’ authors – will be reading stories from the book at The Twig BookShop, 306 Pearl Parkway, Suite 106, on Jan. 28, 5:30-7 p.m.
Ketner will be joined by story authors Dawn Silvius, Terry Burton, Chili Ornelas, Judy Godinez, and Jan Olsen.
Traveling Mercies: Encounters with Asylum Seekers, includes 71 stories by 31 authors, written by IWC volunteers who – over the past 10 years – have welcomed the families and individuals arriving in San Antonio’s Greyhound Bus Station or International Airport enroute to families or shelters in other US cities.
Through the book, you will witness the asylum seekers’ kindness, their generosity, their family values, their wise and foolish choices, their humor – even silliness, and their deep gratitude at having arrived at a place of safety. We see their courage in leaving their imperiled homes, their tenacity in having undergone a dangerous journey, and their determination to adapt to a new and different way of life knowing their trials are not yet ended.
Let the authors tell you about the people they’ve met; it may differ from the narrative you’ve heard from others.
