IWC would be nothing without its volunteers. Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers who filled the sanctuary at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church on Saturday, Oct. 12, for a special music concert and reception. Our 10th Anniversary Volunteer Appreciation concert and reception was a big success.
The concert featured the 76-member South Texas Symphonic Orchestra, which has emerged as one of San Antonio’s leading major orchestras. Formed in 2017, STXSO is dedicated to performing the highest-caliber symphonic music, often to underserved and underrepresented audiences. Each player must undergo a competitive audition for a limited number of chairs. Each year, STXSO provides free symphonic concerts to thousands of students across Texas.
Following the concert, volunteers expressed appreciation to IWC Member Mary Grace Ketner, IWC Volunteer Coordinator Alexandrea Rodriguez, IWC Advocacy Committee Member Rebecca Flores, IWC Advocacy Committee Chair Yvonne Dilling, IWC Hospitality Coordinator Kabibi Bamuamba, and IWC Board Chair Katie Myers.
At the event, many people took the opportunity to purchase a copy of the newly released book Traveling Mercies: Encounters with Asylum Seekers in San Antonio. Thank you to everyone who attended and we look forward to future gatherings.
