The Interfaith Welcome Coalition is a faith-based movement meeting the changing needs of asylum-seekers, refugees, and at-risk immigrants in collaboration with others.
We seek a connector.
The IWC is a volunteer-driven organization. We have pursued our mission for nearly eight years with a working Board of Directors and a diverse body of volunteers and partner organizations. Because our work has become more complex over the years, and also because the pandemic greatly reduced our pool of willing and able volunteers, we seek to hire a Volunteer Recruiter to raise awareness of our efforts and bring more mission-driven people into our ranks. As the title implies, the job is primarily a recruitment position whose success will be measured by the increase of volunteers who actively participate in our various ministries. The Volunteer Recruiter will also work to retain our current volunteers. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional communicator.
The Volunteer Recruiter will have crucial responsibilities.
● Utilize comprehensive recruitment strategies to recruit volunteers for the various
ministries, ensuring placement of sufficient numbers of volunteers to meet operational
needs. General and targeted outreach and recruiting activities will engage a wide range
of resource pools, networks, and social media to obtain appropriate applicants and
guide them through the authorization and onboarding process.
● Identify, cultivate, and maintain relationships with key volunteer recruitment
agencies/organizations, faith-based outreach to nurture and develop relationships,
market segments, and populations to create a robust network and strong candidate
pipeline for future needs.
● Partner with current IWC volunteers, Board members, and staff to strengthen existing
relationships and evaluate prospective volunteer recruitment sources and partnerships.
● Provide coaching and guidance to volunteers, while being aware of the cultural
differences among the organization’s service population, volunteers, and staff, including
coordination of volunteer orientations, group face-to-face training, placements, meetings,
and events.
● Collaborate with IWC’s committees and coordinators to leverage existing resources and
develop new recruitment and training materials.
● Maintain accurate records of all potential and actual volunteers using shared databases,
including the production of status reports as requested, and train others on usage of
information tools as appropriate.
● Take on other duties as necessary or assigned by the Coordinating Director.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate qualities and skills of mission-driven networking.
The new Volunteer Recruiter must:
- have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field OR have at least two years’ experience in volunteer recruitment/coordination;
- be committed to and energized by the IWC’s mission;
- be culturally competent and invested in building relationships with diverse stakeholders;
- be team-oriented and knowledgeable about group dynamics;
- be efficient at implementing programs;
- be a ready and willing learner;
- be organized and outcome-driven;
- be fluent with office technology software, including databases;
- be professionally proficient in English;conversational proficiency in Spanish or other languages;
- be able to communicate well, have storytelling abilities;
- be willing and able to travel throughout greater San Antonio;
- be willing and able to meet face-to-face with people in various settings;
- perform all job requirements with or without reasonable accommodation; and
- be able to pass a background check and provide at least 2 professional references.
The Volunteer Recruiter will report to the Coordinating Director. The position is part-time and non-exempt, with an expectation of 30 hours of work per week, sometimes during evenings and weekends. The wage range is $25 per hour, depending on qualifications. The IWC is a small non-profit without a human resources infrastructure, but we aspire to be an affirming workplace where an employee can learn and develop and have an enduring impact over time.
The IWC believes that Black lives matter and that no human being is illegal. We honor all kinds of families and we do not expect our guests to justify their presence. The IWC is an equal-opportunity employer that follows all applicable laws against discrimination and does notmake hiring or employment decisions on the basis of race, color, religion or religious beliefs, ethnic or national origin, nationality, native language, sex, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, military or veteran status, marital or family status, or income. We will consider any applicant who is authorized to work in the United States. While employees and volunteers must undergo a background check, we will also consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records. The IWC has designed a selection process that actively mitigates bias, and we welcome feedback from applicants about their experience.
The Interfaith Welcome Coalition (IWC) formed in San Antonio, Texas, during the summer of 2014 in response to the overwhelming need of unaccompanied children arriving in the United States from Central America and elsewhere. A broad network of faith communities, grassroots organizations, and social services came together to provide humanitarian support to migrant children and families. The work has evolved with changing needs and policies, and now the IWC is at the forefront of a collaborative, dynamic movement promoting justice for refugees, asylum-seekers, and other marginalized migrants. Those whom we welcome now include people from Central and South America, the Caribbean, and West Africa, and our love is as likely to be in the form of advocating for systemic change as in the providing of a backpack. We consider it a privilege to be able to walk briefly alongside families and individuals fleeing violence, persecution, and economic injustice and to offer them support that affirms their humanity and eases their journey.
